A few of my favorite things...I love the color green, pearls, anything vintage, Jane Austen, the sea, anything sweet, baking, traveling, a good book, my morning coffee, fairy tales, afternoon teas, lace...
Hi! My name is Brittany and Lizzie and Jane is where my loves of literature, travel, food, and fashion come together. Lizzie and Jane is named for the two eldest sisters in my favorite novel, Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen. So many facets of this story, time period, and author both inspire and fascinate me in every aspect of my life so much so that my name has really become synonymous to the novel to those who know me. My hope is for Lizzie and Jane to also be a place of inspiration and fascination, whether it is to offer an outfit idea; to talk about fashion trends and current obsessions; or to take a step back and relax and read a recipe or two to try over the weekend; to find a good new book; or just to look at pictures of pretty places and clothes. Enjoy!
I think it’s safe to say you all know about my love for floral dresses by now. This dress is a couple of years old but the nice thing about floral prints is that they don’t really go out of style, especially if you choose a classic color palette and silhouette. I try to collect pieces for my closet that I really love and that I know I will be able to wear time and again so when I’m looking for printed pieces, I like to stick to floral prints and stripes most of the time (gingham is also very classic, I just don’t have much of it in my closet… maybe I’ll add a fun gingham piece this summer!).
I’ve also been tending towards more classic and neutral items the past year. I still love color (have you seen my Instagram feed?!) but where I would have been print mixing and wearing multiple bold colorways at one time, I prefer a solid pop of color or a stripe or floral to add some color and fun to a look. Note: If you have seen my Instagram, you’ll know I’m only talking about myself here, I’m clearly all about the print mixing and brights when it comes to dressing Amelia! I’ve just been feeling like the older I get, the more I’ve been craving clean lines, crisper colors, and more classic and feminine pieces as opposed to the trendier pieces I used to choose.
Have you noticed your style changing year over year? I feel like I’m finally getting to a spot in my style journey where I know what I like, what is “most me,” and what I’m going to get the most use out of. That also means it’s time for a serious closet clean out… which admittedly is NOT my strong suit. I seriously always think I will wear something again, even if it’s been years (as in more than a year and sometimes more than 2 or 3… I even use the excuse that Amelia may want it someday… I wish I was kidding!)! In all fairness to myself, though, I do only buy what I love (in part because of practicality and budget reasons but also because I really do just love fashion) so when I go to pare down my wardrobe, it’s mostly full of once really loved pieces that I have a hard time parting with.

I’m so happy that it’s the weekend! I’m trying to get back into a routine over here after traveling for most of the last 10 days but we’re heading to the beach this weekend so this will be my last post for the week. I’m planning to have our Montauk travel diary with Haven up next week so check back for that (or subscribe to my mailing list and receive an email when the post is live!) and the blog is getting a redesign soon that I’m super excited about so stay tuned!!
My floral obsession just seems to be getting stronger lately and this mint floral dress is no exception! I also really like this wrap style. It’s super flattering and the color is so pretty! I wore this for Easter (we tried to take photos that day but they didn’t turn out well enough to use here) but I’ve already worn it multiple times since and plan to wear it through the summer, too. I like that this one pairs just as well with boots as it does with heels or sandals.
I’ve also been really into bright colors (and sherbet shades) and anything with rainbows lately. Color always seems to make me happy! I’ve been trying to add some brights back into my wardrobe as I went through a bit of a neutral phase for a while and tried to purchase mostly neutral pieces.

Sorry I’ve been missing for the past week and a half- last Monday was Joe’s 30th birthday which was really nice but the rest of the week was a bit rough as we had to put one of my cats to sleep. I’d had him for about ten years but we found out he had diabetes over the winter and he was declining pretty quickly so we made the decision that it was finally time. We also had a wedding over the weekend and then Joe went away on a work trip and just got home yesterday so time has not quite been on my side. Looking forward to getting back in the swing of things today (or maybe tomorrow!)! Hope you all have a great day!
P.S. Are you following along on Instagram? We just had family photos done and I posted a few here! I’ll be sharing them on the blog soon!
With Memorial Day and summer right around the corner, my May wish list is looking bright and beachy. I’m more than ready for strings of sunny days spent by the water smelling of sunscreen and the ocean in my hair. I also can’t wait for Amelia to experience the beach again this summer and it will be fun to take Joseph to the beach for the first time!
On a material note, there are so many things I “need” this summer that I’ve been putting off for too long so now it feels like too much at one time. However, I’m in actual need of a beach bag, I’d really like a new swimsuit since I’m not pregnant this summer ;), and I could use a new coverup and some neutral slides. But a little bit at a time, right?! I’m thinking about trying a one piece this summer but I also still love the high waist styles!
Are you doing anything exciting for the long weekend? We still haven’t decided and are going back and forth between spending a few days at the beach or the bay or getting some projects done around the house. I know the housework will be here when we get home but we’ve been staining our deck and fence for probably two months now and it really just needs to be done! Somehow we haven’t even had time to talk about it yet (Joe doesn’t get home from work until close to 7 and by the time we have dinner and get the kids ready for bed, I’m usually ready for bed, too!) but hopefully today we’ll decide.
I bought this vintage slip a long time ago (like, when I was in college) and this was the first time I’ve ever worn it. I’m definitely one of those people who collects clothes- not a clothes hoarder, necessarily, but I like to collect really pretty pieces and items that mean something to me. I also tend to keep the tags on newly purchased items and don’t like to wear them right away (kind of weird for a style blogger, right?)! Anyway, this slip is from the 1950s and I fell in love with the Cinderella blue and the white embroidery. The only issue is that it is slightly see-through…
It’s tough to get Amelia to pose for (or even get in) pictures anymore but she really didn’t have a choice here as we were taking them on the side of the street and she kept running away from us. So, I had to hold her and though she still wouldn’t pose for any of the pictures, they turned out pretty cute! Her romper is from Old Navy and it’s adorable! It’s perfect for days when there’s a little breeze but still warm enough for short sleeves.
Also, I just have to tell you that these Freshly Picked moccasins are still my favorite shoes for her (check out their sale here). I know they’re a little expensive for baby and kids shoes but these are pretty much the only shoes Amelia has worn for most of her life so in my mind it evened out as I wasn’t buying her multiple pairs of shoes (disclaimer: she has obviously worn other shoes but many of them were gifts and any others that I may have purchased were extremely inexpensive- cue the $3 flip flip from Old Navy!). They stay on her feet, they’re the only shoes she didn’t kick off all the time when she was a baby, and they last for a long time. They’re worth every penny to me BUT I do like to get them on sale 😉

Hope you all have a great day! We’re heading to speech and then to visit my sister and hopefully when we get home miss Amelia will take a nap so I can tackle some things on my to do list… well, a girl can dream!
Here are some of my favorites for your typical wedding (meaning not black tie). I love all three for a spring/summer wedding but this lace one would be perfect year round, especially in red or black! Somehow I still don’t have an all lace dress… but they’re a really good all occasion dress and a good year round option as they don’t go out of style and lace good for all seasons. I also want to note that while I do love buying a new dress for a special occasion, it’s definitely smarter to invest in a good Little Black Dress (I bought my favorite LBD here last year and I’ve gotten countless wears out of it. Next on my list is finding a good pair of nude heels! While I still love a good pop of color, I’ve also found myself wanting more neutrals to ground my looks and keep my style classic and timeless.
These are a few of my favorites for a more formal wedding. I feel like the lace and the off the shoulder dress could also work for any wedding and this sequins one is more formal (think black tie- I actually have this one in blush and I LOVE it!). When looking at really formal gowns, classic is my go to. Especially since they’re not typically on the low end of price ranges, I prefer to buy something that I can wear again (and again, if need be!).
We have a decent amount of weddings this season (May-October) already so I’ve really been looking at dresses and trying to narrow down my options. Last year we had a lot of weddings, too, but I was pregnant and so I wasn’t all that into buying new clothes (unless I could wear them post pregnancy as well- maternity clothes aren’t my favorite) but I’m excited to finally be able to fit back into my wardrobe. Do you have any fun events coming up?
I know I’ve been a bit more absent around here but we’ve been staining our deck and fence and wow… it’s taken SO much more time than I originally thought it would. I’ve been waking up early (not that early, my goal is to be out of bed between 6:30 and 6:45 and it really should be between 6 and 6:15 if I want to get anything done but I also need sleep so…) and working on it during naptimes and any time I can occupy Amelia outside. Usually she wants to “help” so I’m not that productive when she’s out there with me. BUT taking on large house projects while trying to keep up with the blog, housework, and finances while caring for two kids is no small task so naturally some things get put on the back burner. I’ve been trying to keep up with Instagram so follow me there if you’re curious about what I’m up to (my Mom says it’s my complaining platform so you have that to look forward to, if you’re interested- haha!)!
I wore this dress to a tea recently and it was perfect! This dress has actually been out for a few seasons and this spring they introduced the floral print and I love it! It’s really cute on its own and can be dressed down with sandals or dressed up even more than this with heels and jewelry- it would even look cute with a blazer thrown over it! Also, not that anyone wants to be thinking this far ahead but I totally plan on wearing it into fall with some booties.
I also really love how easy and comfortable these mules are. I didn’t think I’d like them at first but honestly I want another pair (I already have these and these)! I really like that I can just slide them on and that they go with everything from jeans to dresses.
I haven’t been wearing hats as much as I used to, or would like to, lately mostly because when I’m trying to run out of the house now I’m making sure I remember formula and diapers as opposed to accessories but I’m going to try to wear more this summer. I really want to get a floppy summer hat next and this one is on my list.

I hope you’ve all had a great week so far! We’re all finally feeling better over here so I’ve been trying to tackle my to do list… well, a little bit each day at least!
I used to think that fall was my favorite season but I get so happy in spring when the weather starts to warm up and the days stay lighter longer and everything is in bloom that I think I’ve officially converted to a spring girl. This tee has been one of my favorites this season and I love that I can continue to wear it even through summer (and fall, but I don’t want to think about that quite yet). Also, I pretty much love peplum anything. It feels so ladylike and even though this is really only a seriously comfortable tee, somehow the peplum makes me feel a little more like I actually got dressed.
I know everyone doesn’t like the combination but I love wearing navy and black together. I think it’s the perfect unexpected color combo and it’s a nice change from the typical (yet classic) navy and white or navy and red. It’s also a nice option for dreary days and gives navy a less nautical feel.
Also, I seriously don’t remember the last time I blow dried and/or curled my hair. Definitely not since Joseph was born… I’ve been throwing some mousse in and letting it air dry because that’s about all the time I have (showering takes up enough time as it is!)! I think it got a little curlier, though, since having him? Is that even a thing?

Happy Wednesday! Hope you all have a great day! I think we’re finally on the upswing from this cough/cold. Amelia’s voice is still pretty raspy and she does have a cough but Joseph’s cough is pretty much gone and his voice is back to normal. Also, I’m feeling much better, though I’d rather still be sick than see them still sick 🙁
This tee is another of my favorites from Everlane. As much as I love dresses, jeans and a tee are more of my daily go to look (when I’m not in leggings). Between running around with the kids and trying to keep up with the house, wearing a tee shirt just makes more sense to me on a daily basis. I love how soft Everlane’s tees are (I even got Joe this one and he loves it!), that they’re machine washable, and many of them are under $20! The quality is pretty incredible and for that price, unbeatable.
The weight of this tee is a good bit heavier than a regular tee but I wanted it because it’s still somewhat cool here in the spring and I love the navy and white stripes. I love the nautical vibe, too, for cool summer nights at the beach or by the bay.
We’ve had some exciting news over here! My niece, Cora James, was finally born Wednesday morning (my poor sister was a week late)! I was at the hospital most of the morning waiting for her to be born and then had to wait a little before we could see her and my sister but I’m so glad I got to one of the firsts to meet her! Joe and I went back Wednesday night so that he could meet her and to bring them some dinner (I had to have a turkey hoagie and a black & white milkshake after I delivered both kids!) and I got to feed her! It was lucky that we went then because yesterday the kids and I started coming down with a cold.
I’m hoping for a bit of a relaxed day today as Joseph has not slept well these past three nights- we’re spoiled, I know. We started him in his crib on Sunday (Saturday, really, but he only lasted about 10 minutes) and he slept great Sunday & Monday nights BUT from Tuesday night on he’s been waking around 1:30 am crying. I started him on oatmeal once a day on Monday I thought that it wreaked a bit of havoc on his system (he was a little constipated) but now I think that it was the congestion waking and keeping him up. Keep your fingers crossed for a speedy recovery for all of us! Being sick is the worst and seeing your kids sick is even worse! I hope you all have a great day!
While I love anything romantic, I don’t usually like to wear pastels from head to toe. I love blush and lighter shades of pink but instead of pairing them with light blue, I’d rather add a bolder color to anchor the look. So, if I’m wearing this blush tee, white jeans, and these cream flats, I’ll add this black or brown tote and these black sunglasses. I don’t like what I’m wearing to “blend” together so I try to pick pieces that stand out against lighter colors.
I’m usually not a big orange person (but this coverup was too cute to leave out) but I LOVE peaches and corals! I’m also really loving all things pink, mint (and any shade of green, really), blues (particularly light blue, french blue, and navy), and buttercup yellow. And pretty much anything with a floral or fruit print!
Also, while the items on this list are actually on my wish list, more than that, I center my wish lists around a central color palette that I’m craving that month. This month clearly it’s pinks and blues.
I recently got this dress from Everlane and I’m obsessed! Previously, I had already loved Everlane for their soft, practical, and affordable (and they show you where each item is made and how much it costs to make) tees (I have 6) so I really wanted to try something different from them. I opted for this tee shirt dress and am really happy with it. I’ve been really into softer colors lately but I still love a good bold, classic color and this red stripe pattern is no exception.
What I love even more than the color and the material is the versatility of the dress. I love that it will go with everything and that it can easily be dressed up or down and even worn as a beach coverup when it’s hot enough! I’m looking forward to wearing it sans sweater and with some cute sandals in the summer months and pairing it with some sneakers and maybe even a baseball cap for running errands. And while I love the red stripe with the red lip, I think it would look really cute with a bright pink lip, too! Really fun for summer!
I hope you all had a great weekend and a happy Monday! The weather has been beautiful here so I’ve been really wanting to do some spring cleaning. I’ve been trying to do at least one thing a day since my two littles monopolize most of my time, rightfully so, and I wouldn’t have it any other way! Amelia loves to play in the dirt and just to be outside so I’ve been doing my best to make sure we spend a decent amount of time outdoors each day. We’ve been planting seeds, staining our backyard fence, and re-potting plants and it’s such a breath of fresh air (see what I did there?!) to be able to open the windows and turn off the heat. I’m also really excited this week because my younger sister is due with her first baby on Friday (it’s a girl!)!

Here’s to a great week! I’m still working on figuring out our routine over here. I feel like every time I get something down something else changes. I’ve also been trying to get better at meal planning and incorporating more fresh foods than not into our diet which should be so much easier than it actually is! I love eating fresh fruits and vegetables but sometimes I feel like it’s such a hassle to get them! I’m also going room by room to see what else I can simplify around here- I’ve been feeling very overwhelmed and cluttered again lately and no amount of list making seems to be helping!
