Amelia’s Big Girl Room Reveal with Leesa Mattress

Welcome to Amelia’s “big girl” room! When we moved in last summer, she still had her toddler bed (a crib with one side removed) and we left the walls white because I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it yet. It’s still a work in progress and probably always will be as she’s changing so much the older she gets but I love how it’s coming together! Age four is kind of tough because she’s still little yet she also is starting to grow out of the toddler-phase so I wanted to kind of honor both stages with this room and allow her space to grow.

I knew I wanted to do a platform bed for her and when we received this Leesa mattress (in a box!), I couldn’t believe how comfortable it was without a boxspring! It’s a great mix of soft but you don’t sink into it. This is “The Leesa” and it is a multi-layer foam mattress, with breathable foam (so Amelia doesn’t wake up sweating anymore) and a medium-firm feel (so you get that soft yet supportive feeling) and we love it just as much as she does! Also, Leesa donates 1 mattress for every 10 sold and has donated over 33,000 to date! They also plant a tree for every one mattress they sell (read more about their efforts here!) and are a certified B corporation! That’s something that makes you feel good about what you’re buying 🙂

I waited a while to write this post because I wanted to make sure we really loved the mattress, first. And after almost 2 months of sleeping on it, Amelia seems to really like it! She has slept through the night and stayed in her room more often than she did in either her crib or her toddler bed and often times she wakes up and hangs out in bed for a bit! I still need to get a mattress protector, though, so if you have any recommendations, please send them my way!

The bed and this painting are my favorite part of the room. I pretty much designed her room around this Clare Elsaesser painting (LOVE her work- I have another of her paintings in our powder room downstairs!). The colors are beautiful and I love anything reminiscent of the sea. I decided to stick with a Cinderella blue theme for the bed’s base layers and then found a pretty blue floral quilt to break it up a bit. I found these gingham pillows on clearance at Target and added a pop of yellow to pull out the yellow in the picture. I also love all the print mixing on her bed. It’s perfectly mismatched!

Her rug is from her first “big girl” room when we moved her out of the nursery in our old house and I haven’t felt the need to buy a new one. Her favorite color is still pink so we went with Pink Shadow by Sherwin Williams for the walls (she actually chose this color… she had a choice of 3) and I’m really happy with it! Her mirror is a vintage mirror that my aunt refinished and her curtains are the ones we had in our family room at our old house. Her dresser is old and it was free- someone gave it to us and I painted it and added new hardware!

They both LOVE to read and it makes my literature-loving and English major heart so happy! That papasan chair on the right is about 9 years old and had been moved all over our house (in our old house) before finally finding its home in Amelia’s room. I love the chair and though it may need a new cushion, it’s cute and comfortable and works great in here!

A closer look at her Leesa mattress. It’s quilted and so soft! Amelia’s is a full and I think it’s perfect for her.

Her reading nook is also one of my favorite spots in her room.

Three of her favorite princesses who just so happen to perfectly match her yellow, pink, and blue color scheme.

Joe and I made this to house Amelia’s (extensive) bow collection of handmade bows from a vintage frame we bought, painted, and attached chicken wire to the back. Most of her bows are from Wunderkin, Labelle Baby, and Pali Handmade.

A full shot of her bed with the rug from her first “big girl room.” I still like it but I think eventually I’ll probably swap it out for something bigger and maybe not so bold, or pink. I love the canopy style, too, and plan to put whit curtains on each corner, maybe when she’s a little older. Right now I’m just trying to teach her and Joseph not to hang from it (I’ve already caught Joseph doing this and I’m pretty sure he bent the bar on the left side of her bed… he also hangs on the canopy in her reading nook and knocks that down all the time. Drives me crazy!).

Here’s a better picture of her “princess chandelier.” I knew I wanted something with crystals and I considered getting an actual chandelier (I wanted a vintage one) but her light fixture is pretty close to the wall so I wasn’t sure one would fit. I found this one on Wayfair and I love it!

bed: Wayfair, quilt: Target (on sale today!), sheets: Target, gingham pillows: Target (sold out), yellow pillow: Target (sold out), light pink throw: Target (similar), mattress: c/o Leesa, girl painting: c/o Clare Elsaesser, dresser: hand-me-down, mirror: vintage & repainted, curtains: Ikea, light fixture: Wayfair, princesses: Disney

I should also note that Joseph loves Amelia’s bed, too! When I put him for a nap he always wants to nap in her bed and sometimes I catch him laying down there. So, I think we’re going to need a Leesa mattress for him very soon, too (he’s only been climbing out of his crib for the last 6 months)! So, other than some of the things I mentioned above, her room is pretty much done. For now, at least. I do want to add a little green somewhere, add the white curtains, swap out the rug, and I’m sure she’ll want certain things added or removed as she gets older.  But right now Amelia loves her new room and I hope you do, too!

Sincerely, Britt
